Migraine headaches involve severe one-sided severe pain, nausea and sensitivity to light and sound. There are two types of migraines:

  • Migraine with Aura: This type of migraine comes with the presence of neurological symptoms prior to or during the headache including visual disturbances, numbness or tingling sensations.

  • Migraine without Aura: This is the most common type of migraine, characterized by severe headache pain on one side of the head with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound.

Although the exact cause of migraines is unknown, it is believed that changes in blood flow and brain activity are responsible. 

Inflammatory chemicals produced during a migraine are believed to have an impact on the trigeminal nerve (the nerve responsible for providing sensation to the face), as well as on the swelling and inflammation of blood vessels in the brain. The release of additional chemicals that exacerbate pain and other migraine-related symptoms may result from this swelling and inflammation.

Certain triggers including stress, abnormal sleep patterns, particular foods and drinks and hormonal changes in women are also thought to either cause or aggravate migraines.

Inflammation and Migraine

It’s believed that inflammation leads to the onset of migraines. This instance of inflammation is called neurogenic inflammation, which is brought on when the nervous system is activated.

The trigeminal nerve, which controls feeling in the head and face, activates during a migraine and releases chemicals that enlarge and inflame the blood vessels in the brain. The release of these inflammatory substances aggravates the pain, potentially leading to migraine symptoms. 

It is also believed that several triggers like stress, changes in sleep patterns, certain foods and beverages and female hormone changes might activate the trigeminal nerve and cause the release of these inflammatory chemicals, causing a migraine to develop.

Menstrual Migraine Migraine: Hormones & Migraines

Menstrual migraines are a specific type of migraine that can happen right before a woman's period. These migraines are believed to arise as a result of hormonal changes, as estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle. 

It’s believed that these hormonal changes could cause the brain to emit substances like prostaglandins. These can inflame and enlarge blood vessels in the brain and cause a migraine to develop as a result of the swelling and inflammation.

Estrogen & Migraine

Throughout a female's menstrual cycle, estrogen levels fluctuate and can stimulate the release of specific chemicals in the brain such as prostaglandins. These chemicals can lead to swelling and inflammation of blood vessels in the brain, which can then result in the development of a migraine. Estrogen may also cause migraines during menopause, due to a drop in estrogen levels.

Abdominal Migraine

Recurrent abdominal pain, also known as abdominal migraines, are suspected to be connected to migraines. They affect children more frequently than adults and females are affected more frequently than males. Although the precise cause of stomach migraines is unknown, they’re believed to be connected to abnormalities in brain activity and blood flow that mirror those seen in migraines.

Abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting are common symptoms of abdominal migraines. The pain is typically widespread and non-specific with additional symptoms including exhaustion, appetite loss and a pale complexion. 

According to some research, certain things including stress, shifts in sleeping habits, particular meals and beverages and hormonal changes in women may cause stomach migraines. Additionally, genetic factors may also contribute to the development of stomach migraines.

Gut Health & Migraine

Gut health refers to the harmony of the bacteria that lives in the gut as well as the overall condition of the digestive system. There is evidence to suggest that gut flora may influence the onset of migraines.

Numerous studies have shown that people with migraines have different types and ratios of gut bacteria than people without migraines. The theory is that the immune system and specific chemicals generated as a result of the gut microbiome's impact on the body can contribute to the onset of migraines.

Liver & Gallbladder Dysfunction & Migraine

There is some evidence to support the idea that having a fatty liver may raise your chance of getting migraines. In the journal ‘Hepatology’, individuals who had migraines were more likely to have fatty liver than in those without migraines.

The ‘Journal of Headache and Pain’ found that people with gallbladder disease were more likely to experience migraines than people without gallbladder disease. It is thought that the inflammation and swelling that occurs as a result of gallbladder disease may affect brain function and contribute to the development of migraines.

In addition, the gallbladder is involved in the regulation of bile flow, which is important for the digestion of fats. Changes in bile flow or abnormal levels of bile components may affect the development of migraines by triggering a severe chain reaction of inflammation.
