Fertility & Infertility
It is estimated that at least 16% of Canadian couples will need help conceiving a child. Due to many different factors including lifestyle and stress, advanced age and illness, this is a number that continues to rise. Even if you have only been trying a few months the process can cause a great deal of stress. Where ever you are in your journey to parenthood, Nielsen clinic can offer you the appropriate support for your body and mind.
At Nielsen Clinic (Calgary), we help develop a treatment plan specific to your current health needs. We help our patients get to the root of their health concerns by customizing treatment and helping you to make positive lifestyle adjustments. If needed, we provide hormone testing which may identify potential underlying concerns or hormonal imbalances.
Below are sections offering information for common questions as well as various elements of infertility.
+ What is Infertility?
Infertility is clinically defined as the inability of a sexually active, non-contraception using couple to achieve pregnancy in one year. There are many different potential causes of sub-optimal fertility including poor semen quality, or quantity, endometriosis, PCOS, clotting disorders, auto-immune issues, or premature ovarian failure to name a few. Often no real reason can be found, and this is the most frustrating answer for couples trying to conceive.
+ How do we treat Infertility?
At Nielsen clinic we treat fertility issues by detecting the underlying condition or imbalance (if you don’t know already) and restoring the proper function of your organs. Once we restore the balanced functioning of your body, especially your endocrine and circulatory systems, your body will self heal any underlying conditions and fertility will be optimal for conception to take place. Specific treatment options will vary depending on your specific circumstance, and each treatment will be tailored to the individual.
We have treatment options to support your body where ever you are in your journey. If you just started trying and want to make sure your body and gamete are as healthy as possible; if you have recently been diagnosed with a condition that is impeding your conception such as PCOS or Endometriosis; or if you want to support your body through an assisted reproductive intervention such as IUI or IVF.
+ What Causes Infertility
There are a number of potential causes of infertility.
Structural problems with the shape of the uterus, including polyps or fibroids can cause difficulty conceiving. Blockage or absence of the fallopian tubes in women will also prevent conception.
Functional problems with the female reproductive system include hormone imbalances that cause irregular cycles or problems with ovulation. Other issues including endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, clotting disorders, anemia and thyroid issues may cause or complicate fertility issues.
Male factor infertility is caused by an equally large number of potential issues. Men can have blocked or absent vas deferens, or hormone imbalances. Problems with semen include issues with quality, quality or mobility of sperm.
Lifestyle factors or circumstance can contribute to infertility. Many chronic illnesses can have a negative impact on fertility. Medications can affect gametes, and illness such as cancer and can have an impact. Stress has a negative impact on both male and female fertility, affecting the gametes and hormone balance.
