Gastrointestinal disorders are the third most common reason to see a doctor. Millions of children are living with different types of digestive disturbances.

A healthy digestive system is central to a child's overall well-being and is essential for their emotional, physical and immune system development in the long term. At Nielsen Clinic (Calgary), we offer a comprehensive approach to your child's digestive health.

If needed, we provide stool analysis which identifies potential underlying concerns ranging from abnormal bacteria, yeast, parasites and inflammatory markers as well as nutritional testing to determine potential concerns with the absorption of fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, amino acids and food intolerances.

Below are sections providing information for common pediatric gastrointestinal complaints.

+ Abdominal Pain in Children (Stomach Aches)

Abdominal pain is perhaps the second most common reason parents will take their children in to see their pediatrician. While abdominal pains in children often go undiagnosed, they are very frequent, disruptive and often do not have an easily definable or identifiable pathology behind them.

The concerns with recurrent abdominal pain is that they not only cause missed school days, but they can lead to the potential development of anxiety later as a child matures. Furthermore, some children experience both recurrent headaches with abdominal pains.

Potential Causes of Abdominal Pain (Tummy Aches)
Functional Dyspepsia
Upset stomach, pain or discomfort in the upper belly, near the ribs that is not relieved by passing stool, or a change in stool frequency and form. Usually related to a child's stress levels or anxiety.

Irritable Bowel Syndrom (IBS)
Abdominal pain that improves with passing stool and frequent change in stools.

Episodic or Continuous Abdominal Pain
Symptoms of abdominal pain that accompanies headaches, limb pain, or difficulty with sleeping patterns.

Abdominal Migraine
Usually, they last for one hour or more with intense headaches and abdominal pain around the belly button region, along with two or more of the following symptoms: anorexia, nausea, vomiting, headaches, photophobia and pale appearance.

+ Reflux AND GERD in Children

Gastroesophageal reflux (reflux or GERD) is when the contents of your child's stomach or acid in their stomach moves upwards into their esophagus.

Symptoms for teenagers are very similar to adults, while infants and younger children have different symptoms which can cause many parents and even doctors who are not trained to miss this cause.

Infant Reflux
It is not unusual for infants to have spit-ups or vomiting. However, in cases where reflux is suspected it presents with a few symptoms: poor weight gain, discomfort when having reflux, wheezing, hoarse voice or crying. Fortunately, most infants outgrow this concern after 12 to 15 months of age. However, getting treatment can improve their quality of life and not interrupt their growth.

Child Reflux
Due to the nature of pediatric medicine, symptoms for reflux can vary widely for each age group. For children older than four, most often they have symptoms of stomach aches (around the belly button), feeling that they need to throw up and even feeling that they have difficulty in swallowing food. In rare cases, some children may show signs of asthma symptoms (coughing or wheezing) even though they do not suffer from asthma.

+ Inflammatory Bowel Disease in Children

Inflammatory bowel disease is often confused with irritable bowel syndrome which is a different type of illness.

Inflammatory bowel disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that involves the stomach, small intestine and large intestine. With irritable bowel disease, there are two types of conditions: Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's disease.

Children and teenagers who suffer from ulcerative colitis can experience frequent loose stools (diarrhea) up to ten times or more per day. Accompanying the frequent bowel movements are abdominal pain, poor weight gain, growth and anemia.

With the Nielsen Clinic 3R's approach we can help your child with their irritable bowel syndrome.

Remove: Symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (diarrhea, stomach pain, nausea, etc.).

+ Diarrhea in Children

Diarrhea can be due to bacteria, viruses or parasites and is usually more common in children who attend daycare due to exposure to viruses.

There are two types of diarrhea, acute and chronic diarrhea. Acute diarrhea is often called acute gastroenteritis and usually occurs with three or more bowel movements a day and lasts for less than three weeks.

Chronic diarrhea lasts longer than three weeks and can be caused due to several types of infections or diseases.

+ Constipation in Children

Constipation is one of the most common reasons parents will bring their children to see their doctor. While it is a common problem, constipation is one of the hardest conditions to treat.

Constipation can arise from a simple change in a child's daily routine including changes from activity levels, new bathrooms, and dietary changes. For some kids, constipation may occur when solid foods are introduced during infancy or even emotional stress (parents separating or divorcing) can result in hard and painful bowel movements.
